Learn English Through Writing

About the Course

Writing is a difficult skill for children to learn and master, and nurturing writing skills at an early age is crucial for their education.

Most children do not know what and how to write, and have difficulties writing with clarity, coherence and organisation.

This online course is specially designed to teach children how to write at a young age and develop their mastery and fluency in the English language. Children will be given ample practice lessons to develop and to sharpen their grammar and writing skills in the English language.

At the end of this course, children should be able to:

  • Build vocabulary and improve grammar skills in the English language

  • Write at word level, sentence level, phrases, simple and complex sentences and paragraphs to connect ideas

  • Create own stories

  • Develop descriptive writing with confidence and fluency

  • Speak English with confidence

This course is open to children from ages 7 to 12.

Understanding the Course

In this course, children learn to approach the writing process by first thinking about what they want to write. They identify ideas, brainstorm, ask and answer WH questions. Then, they arrange their thoughts with a graphic organiser to create a framework that will lead to a clear and organised piece of writing.

Teachers will model how to use the graphic organiser and provide children with guided and independent practice as well as feedback.

By learning to write step-by-step, children will be able to see the big picture, understand and translate their ideas into writing, and improve their writing skills—making writing easy, fun and creative for them.

The Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) Model

This online course uses the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) Model for teaching in the classroom. The GRR Model provides teachers with an instructional network that progresses from teacher’s knowledge to children’s understanding and application. Teachers begin each activity by showing how it is done, then do it together with the students and finally students do it independently. This ensures that children are supported in the acquisition of the skills and strategies necessary for success in writing.

The GRR approach also enables children to express their thoughts with confidence and be inspired to write creatively. It provides instructions that support children to become capable thinkers and learners. Children will also learn to handle writing tasks and to hone their skills further.

This course is highly interactive and encourages children to exchange ideas and learn through observation, discussion and sharing. It inspires, motivates and empowers them to think and write creatively and confidently.

Key Features

This course uses the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model to teach. Teachers begin each activity by showing how it is done, then do it together with the students and finally, students do it on their own.

Our lessons are focused on developing grammar, vocabulary and strong writing skills in English. Interactive lesson exercises and homework are done on an online platform and are graded from easy to challenging.

Various fun games, puzzles, quizzes and videos are introduced to encourage student participation and to reinforce and assess learning of lessons.

Students gain confidence with learning English and are able to demonstrate and communicate their ideas in a structured and coherent manner.

Students learn to use online learner’s dictionaries to check for meaning and parts of speech of new words. They also listen to how words are pronounced and used in sentences through the examples in the dictionaries.

Our approach supports a holistic learning experience. We foster life skills in them such as critical thinking and problem solving, communication and group work, creative thinking and imagination, as well as self-directed and engaged learning.
